Scope and Application

1.1 Purpose

To identify to ship owners, ship operators, masters, officers and crew members of the requirement to successfully complete a Marine Safety approved training record book as a part of the mandatory minimum 6 months of sea service before being examined for the first certificate of competence as a watchkeeping engineer.

To provide details of the on board training during the required seagoing service.

To provide an approved model Training Record Book, that may be used by candidates for certificates of competency as an officer in charge of an engineering watch.

1.2 Scope ^

Compliance with the mandatory requirements as detailed in Chapter III of the Seafarers’ Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) Code A of the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers, 1978, as amended in 1995, to which Canada is a party.

Effectively, this requirement applies to applicants for certificates of competency as 4th Class, 3rd Class and 2nd Class engineer, where applicable.

1.3 Effective date ^

This document enters into force on February 1, 2002.

1.4 Authority ^

The Marine Certification Regulations, section 34, (SOR/97-391) made pursuant to the Canada Shipping Act (R.S.C. 1985, c.s-9) as amended.
