Highlights
Rail Equipment Manufacturing
The rail equipment manufacturing sector includes companies which design and
manufacture rolling stock and fixed equipment for use in freight and passenger
interurban rail services, commuter rail services, and rail transit systems
such as subways and streetcars. Canada has: car builders which design and
engineer passenger and freight rail cars; fabricate and assemble their body
shell; select, install, and connect their major subsystems; perform final
assembly and testing of the complete vehicle; and provide after-sales service
in conformity with contractual arrangements. Locomotive builders who design
and engineer locomotives. Rail parts and component suppliers who design,
engineer and manufacture components and subsystems for cars and locomotives.
Materials suppliers who have the responsibility to supply sheet and formed
metal, plastics, glass, fasteners, wiring and piping. Signalling equipment
suppliers who supply the electronic, electrical and electro-mechanical equipment
used for train and route control and central control equipment. Rail and
track equipment suppliers in charge of rail, ties, fasteners, turnouts, turnout
motors and turnout snow blowers. Repair and rebuilding shops and rail and
transit consultants also play a vital role in Canada's rail equipment
manufacturing sector.
