First meeting of Kyoto Protocol’s Joint Implementation Supervisory Committee

The first ever meeting of the Kyoto Protocol’s Joint Implementation (JI) Supervisory Committee took place in Bonn, Germany, 2-3 February 2006. JI is one of three mechanisms established under the landmark UN-sponsored treaty to achieve cuts in emissions and help tackle climate change. Joint implementation allows industrialized countries to implement projects that reduce emissions, or increase removals using sinks, in other industrialized countries. JI projects are most likely to take place in central and eastern European transition economies and Russian Federation, where there is more scope for cutting emissions at lower costs than in other industrialized countries.
