Transportation Acronym Guide 1996

This report presents transportation acronyms, initialisms, and their referents used by the federal government, private organizations, Canada, and Mexico. This report provides users of transportation information with a comprehensive inventory of transportation acronyms and their referents. The Source Index lists the sources used to compile this report.

You may search by Acronym, Definition or Alphabetically. You can perform only one search at a time. Entering information into both search fields does not narrow search results. If you have trouble, visit Help.

Search Information

A record is composed of an acronym, definition and sources.
For example, 'DOT' is the expression, 'Department of Transportation' is the
definition and '(BTS2) (FAA3) (FAA9) (FHWA1) (MTMC1)' are the sources.

  • None of the searches are case sensitive. Searching for DOT will produce the same results as searching for dot.
  • All fields search for the string as it is entered and will return anything that matches or contains that string. Searching for DOT in the Acronym field will return results for DOT and DOTS.
  • Acronym: This represents the acronyms contained in the source material. You would use this search when you know the acronym but seek its definition. For example: To find the exact definition for DOT, type DOT in the Acronym search box. You will receive the full record for that query and any others that contain the string 'DOT' in their acronyms.
  • Definition: This represents the definitions contained in the data. You would use this search when you know the definition, or part of the definition, but seek an acronym. For example: To find the exact acronym for Department of Transportation, type Department of Transportation in the Definition search box. You will receive the full record for that query and any others that contain the string "Department of Transportation" in their definitions. You do not have to know an entire definition to obtain its acronym. You may search for a keyword or a series of keywords.
  • Alphabetical Listing: This function works differently than the Acronym and Definition searches. To view a list of records whose acronyms begin with the same letter, click that letter on the alphabet list. For example: To view all acronyms beginning with the letter B, click B on the alphabet list. You will receive full records for all acronyms that begin with the letter B.
