Canadian Transportation Research Gateway

Canada is poised for a dynamic future in transportation. New opportunities and challenges will arise as the industry adapts to changing demographics, technological advances and changing skills requirements for the Canadian workforce. The transportation sector offers exciting and rewarding work. The sector must continue to attract qualified and highly skilled workforce entrants in order for transportation to continue to play its key role as an economic enabler and to maintain the quality of life for all Canadians now and in the future. 

Transport Canada is committed to working with the transportation sector, universities and colleges, other governments and other federal departments to ensure the continued availability of a world-class, highly skilled workforce for the transportation sector.

Transportation Sector Stakeholders - Sector Councils 

Transportation Sector Councils represent both employee and employer groups, and bring together representatives from business, labour, education, other professional organizations, and government to identify issues and to implement long-term, human resources planning and skills development strategies for the transportation sector. 

There are currently four transportation Sector Councils:

Federal Granting Councils

  • Natural Sciences and Engineering Council of Canada (NSERC) 
    Supports the development of highly qualified Canadians involved in science and engineering studies and research. NSERC invests millions of dollars in transportation-related Research and Development (R&D;). Their annual transportation-related expenditure of $15 million supports more than 300 professors and approximately 300 students at various Canadian universities. 

Educational Institutions

  • Université de Montreal. Center for Research on Transportation. (Montreal, Quebec) 
    Specializes in quantitative and computer-based methodologies and analyses as applied to the planning, management and operation of urban, interurban and international passenger and freight transportation systems. The Center is also skilled in performing analyses of regulatory, economic and other environments and of industrial, governmental and other policies affecting transportation systems.
