  1. What if I realize I made a mistake on my tax return or receive an additional information slip after I've sent it via NETFILE?
You can't use NETFILE to change your tax return. To make a change to your tax return, wait until you receive your Notice of Assessment. Once you've received it, you can send a completed form T1-ADJ T1 Adjustment Request, or a signed letter to your tax centre requesting an adjustment to your tax return. You can also use My Account's Change my return option.

If you send a letter, provide your name, address, and social insurance number, and indicate the tax years to be adjusted. Also, because we wouldn't have received any paper documents with your NETFILE tax return, include the receipts and supporting documents for the original claim and the changes you want to make. For example, if you want to claim an additional charitable donation, you have to submit all charitable donation receipts, not just the receipt(s) for the additional amount.

  2. What happens after I send my tax return?
Once we receive your tax return, we'll do a preliminary check. If your return meets the basic conditions, we'll send you a confirmation number over the Internet to let you know that it has been accepted. This usually only takes a few seconds.

  3. Will you contact me after I file my tax return if it's accepted?
Once we accept your tax return and you receive your confirmation number, we pass your tax return on for processing. However, since we may need to contact you for clarification or to verify some information, make sure that you complete the telephone number area of your tax return.

After processing is complete, we'll send your Notice of Assessment to you by regular mail.

    Note
If we have to contact you, your refund and Notice of Assessment will be delayed.

  4. What do I do with my information slips and papers?
With NETFILE, you don't send your tax information slips, receipts, or other documents used to prepare your tax return. You are still required to keep your receipts for six years, in case we ask to see them.

  5. How do I find out the status of my current-year tax return?
You can view this information through My Account.

Describes the current status for your return:

    Not received
Means that we have not received your return, or it has been received but not entered into our computer system. If you filed your return on or before April 15, it could take four weeks before it shows as received. If you filed your return after April 15, it could take six weeks before it shows as received.

If you filed your return using EFILE, NETFILE, or TELEFILE, shortly after you receive your confirmation number, your return status will show as received. However, the information will not be updated immediately on My Account.

    Received
Means that we have received your return, but that it has not yet been assessed.

    Assessed
Means that this tax return has been processed by our computer system for the first time, and your Notice of Assessment has been mailed to you.

    Reassessed
Means that your return has been changed, and a Notice of Reassessment has been mailed to you.
