Analysis of Ditching and Water Survival Training Programs of Major Airframe
Manufacturers and Airlines
PURPOSE
This Commercial and Business Aviation Advisory Circular (CBAAC) is to inform air
operators of the availability of the report entitled "Analysis of Ditching and
Water Survival Training Programs of Major Airframe Manufacturers and Airlines".
BACKGROUND
The Federal Aviation Administrations (FAA), Civil Aeromedical Institute (CAMI)
recently conducted a study to examine the information flight attendants, as well as
passengers, are provided about ditching and water survival equipment and procedures to
determine if existing training practices are satisfactory. Special emphasis was placed
on unplanned water landing events.
This activity resulted from industry and regulatory inquiries about ditching and
water survival operations, especially with regard to the increasing number of aircraft
operations, and associated opportunities for emergency water landing events.
CAMI reviewed current transport category air crew training programs provided by
nine major airlines. The documentation review related to the content and attention to
detail pertaining to ditching and water survival.
Six major airframe manufacturers also provided training materials related to
ditching and water survival.
In addition, information was gathered on water landing events from published
reports.
DISCUSSION
The resulting analysis identifies deficiencies in both water survival equipment
and procedures, and recommends solutions designed to promote more advanced water
landing and water survival operations.
