Seniors Advisory Committee

Effective September 25, 2006, as a result of the Government's decision to reduce program expenditures, all the advisory committees of the Canada Revenue Agency, including the Seniors Advisory Committee, were eliminated. This page and its links contain references to historical activities of the Seniors Advisory Committee whose activities have now ceased.

The Seniors Advisory Committee (SAC) was established in 1991 to communicate more effectively with Canada's growing senior population.

The SAC is a consultative forum through which Canada's seniors can provide advice, assistance and feedback to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) on products, services and initiatives that may affect Canadian seniors.

The purpose of the Committee is to provide a meaningful forum to identify Canadian seniors' needs and expectations as they relate to the CRA and to determine how best to inform them of their rights and obligations. Members of the Committee provide the CRA with advice and feedback on administrative issues and current and future initiatives that reflect the perspective of Canadian seniors. In doing so, they assist in the development and marketing of new products and services which impact this target group.

The SAC is comprised of approximately 25 men and women of various ethnic origins from across Canada. The group represents a cross-section of the senior population with membership balanced between the provinces and territories.

SAC members are selected based on recommendations made by a wide variety of Canadian seniors organizations or associations, or because of their involvement in the CRA's Community Volunteer Income Tax Program. Nominations are presented to, and approved by, the Chair of the Committee. The Commissioner of the CRA and the Minister of National Revenue are advised of all appointments.

The Committee meets once a year in Ottawa and "Ad hoc" consultations may take place throughout the year, as required. The Assistant Commissioner, Taxpayer Services and Debt Management Branch, is the chairperson of the SAC. In his absence, the Director General, Taxpayer Services Directorate chairs the Committee.
