Welcome to The Centre
for Sustainable Transportation
The Centre for Sustainable Transportation, which was established
in the Toronto Region in the mid 1990’s, is now an integral
part of the University
of Winnipeg, a leading city core university dedicated to the
principles of sustainable development.
The Centre was founded to provide leadership in achieving sustainable
transportation in Canada. It provides reliable information, fills
knowledge gaps through research, educates stakeholders and raises
awareness among them, and offers strategic policy advice in selected
areas. The Centre strives to become a central resource on sustainable
transportation practices and supporting information.
Transportation is linked to all aspects of Canadian life. Our natural
environment, economic prosperity, and social well being all depend
on transportation systems that are clean, efficient, and equitable.
Current transportation trends are considered unsustainable. They
are threatening our environmental, economic, and social future.
Altering these trends is not an easy task and requires the cooperation
of all stakeholders.
The role of the Centre is to assist decision-makers in making appropriate
choices in how Canada’s transportation systems are planned
and delivered. It is a membership-based
organization and welcomes supporters from all parts of Canada and
beyond.
What is sustainable transportation?
A sustainable transportation system is one that:
. Allows the basic access needs of individuals and societies
to be met safely and in a manner consistent with human and ecosystem
health, and with equity within and between generations.
. Is affordable, operates efficiently, offers choice of transport
mode, and supports a vibrant economy.
. Limits emissions and waste within the planetπs ability
to absorb them, minimizes consumption of non-renewable resources,
limits consumption of renewable resources to the sustainable yield
level, reuses and recycles its components, and minimizes the use
of land and the production of noise.
