Why are we interested in plain language? At Literacy Partners of Manitoba we help people improve their literacy skills. At the same time, we urge organizations to write simply and clearly so that more readers can understand the message.

Let’s dispel some myths.

First, plain language is not dumbing down. Plain language is good style. If you use our services, we’ll teach you to write well for your audience.

Second, there is no single plain language. There are levels of plain language appropriate for your audience and purpose. But all these levels of plain language have this in common: they are as simple and clear as the concepts allow.

Third, plain language will not reach everybody. Some adults will not be able to read even the simplest documents. Nonetheless, if you write in plain language you will reach more people than you will if you don’t.
