Canadians file on-line in record numbers

Ottawa, March 16, 2005... It's tax time again, and with each passing year, more and more Canadians are choosing to file their income tax returns electronically. The Minister of National Revenue, John McCallum, says that trend shows no signs of letting up, and that electronic filing is more popular than ever.

"More than a million Canadians filed their tax returns on-line by the end of February, which is a record pace for the Canada Revenue Agency", said Minister McCallum, "It's easy to understand the popularity of e-filing - it's fast, efficient and secure."

Last year more than 11 million Canadians filed their tax returns electronically. Minister McCallum says this is due to the fact that many Canadians have realized that electronic filing is as easy and convenient as paying bills on-line.

"If you've got a refund coming, electronic filing is the fastest way to get your money. There's no paper return or receipts to mail, and you get immediate confirmation that your return has been received", said Minister McCallum.

Those who owe money can still make their tax-filing experience paperless and stress-free. After filing, taxes can be paid through a financial institution's Internet or telephone banking services.
