CRA using two-dimensional (2D) bar codes on income tax returns

In an effort to improve efficiency and, at the same time, increase data accuracy, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has partnered with the tax software development community to include two-dimensional (2D) bar codes on paper returns.

Tax preparation software packages will generate 2D bar codes on the 2005 T1 Income Tax and Benefit Return. As a result, when the return is printed, a 2D bar code similar to the one illustrated below will print on the first page of the return. In some instances, a bar code can also be printed on page 2 if the return contains financial statements. In the rare situation where the return does not meet the criteria for 2D bar code, none will be printed.

When the CRA receives the return, an agent retrieves the information from the 2D bar code using a laser bar code reader instead of keying it manually. The data will then be validated and processed by the same system used to process regular returns.

Here are helpful do’s and don’ts to keep in mind when filing your income tax return:

  • Do reprint your entire income tax return if you made changes after the original return was printed.
  • Do not print in draft mode as the 2D bar code reader might have problems reading the
    2D bar code.
  • Do not alter the 2D bar code by adding marks, erasing parts of it, writing over it, etc.
