Madrid David-Andrés Novoa, Madrid: Living Life to the Fullest
Moving to Madrid, Spain to complete an internship at the Canadian Embassy was like plunging into an exciting new adventure! I had obtained the position through my Co-op program at the University of Ottawa, and during my several months there I learned so much, both personally and professionally. Through the many challenges I faced, as well as the innumerable rewards, I discovered the importance of flexibility and of keeping an open mind.

Germany Lisa Quirke Teaches German School Kids About Canada
My experiences in Germany have been excellent so far. A teaching assistantship through the PAD, a German exchange organization, gave me the chance to work as an English language assistant at a school in Mainz. It was incredible to see how languages are taught in Europe and the students' motivation was inspiring.

Slovenia Martin Coursol, Slovenia: An Eye Opener
Before working in Slovenia I had previously been to Europe on my own. I had the opportunity to visit the UK with the Working Holiday Program which facilitated my stay by allowing me to travel and work my way through the country. This time using Employment Services at the University of Montréal I found a six-month placement in Slovenia through a Canadian NGO called CANADEM.

Budapest Neil Horner, Gets a Hand on Journalism in Budapest
I was working with a publishing company in Budapest, Hungary, writing for Business Hungary, an English language business magazine. The position gave me tremendous freedom and I spent a lot of time interviewing and covering business and political events. I learned a great deal about media and journalism from the experience and was even writing feature stories by the end!

Hungary Ian Stutt, A Young Canadian in Hungary
My internship took place in Budapest, Hungary, with the Roma Press Center, a non-profit, NGO, working to stimulate and strengthen public attention toward Roma issues. The internship was an invaluable experience, which I can use as a solid stepping stone for future opportunities back here in Canada.

Scotland E. Drinkwater, Global Journeys Summer Program in Scotland/Ireland
"I just wanted to take a minute and thank you for organizing such an incredible trip. It was definitely an experience of a lifetime. I have so many fond memories that I know I'll cherish always. I did everything and anything I possibly could to pack the trip full of new experiences – you should see how many pamphlets I have from places I visited. Even after 18 rolls of film, I felt I hadn't documented enough."

Aerialview Stockholm Kristy McKamey Describes IAESTE Internship in Sweden
A few words to describe the infinite experience I've gained from my IAESTE placement; that's a hard task. But after 15 months of work at SKF in Sweden, I have the confidence to tackle it! I started my placement in June of 2002. It was supposed to last 10 months; I've been here for 15. Right there that tells you a lot.

Malbork Castle, Poland Canada-Poland: Youth Working Together
In May 2003, York university students visited Krakow, Poland for a 10 day conference on "Media and Tolerance in Society". This student cultural exchange, organized by Jagiellonian and York university students served to build ties between young people from both sides of the Atlantic. The second part of the conference, when young Polish students will be visiting Canada, will take place in Toronto in May 2004.

Eiffel Tower, France The Winding Road to Paris
The plan was simple. Spend the summer after graduation working in France. A noble plan. Little did I know how much it (and I) would change within three months. It all started in March, when I made up my mind to go abroad. After reviewing several options, I decided on SWAP France. It was the perfect opportunity to live and travel abroad while brushing up on my français.

London M. Ship, Global Journeys Summer Program in London/Oxford
The Global Journeys program provided me with an opportunity of a lifetime. Although I was learning Grade 12 English, I ended up learning much, much more. Mr. Wright is a fabulous teacher; I will forever love English because of him. The workload may have seemed heavy, but looking back now I realize that that's the sort of work ethic I'll need for University. The program was a great means of preparation. Global Journeys introduced me to some wonderful people with whom I'm still friends with and keep in contact!

Rosenborg Palace, Denmark Rong David Dai experiences life in Denmark with IAESTE Internship
There is no doubt that a work placement abroad would be beneficial to one's growth. I've just never realised how much of a changed person I am today because of it. It hit me a few weeks ago when I was biking to work. As I felt the wind in my hair, it suddenly occurred to me that I was biking to work in Copenhagen, Denmark. To work! In Copenhagen, Denmark!

globe Globetrotting
Similar to most young people today, I was very unsure with the direction of my life. The time after university can be difficult for a lot of us. I had just graduated at age 22 and reality had hit hard that real life was going to have to begin. The thought of gaining work experience outside Canada had never once occurred to me until I came across an article about SWAP in the newspaper. I had absolutely no idea what was available to me out in Canada, let alone in another country!

Scotland A. Riaz, Global Journeys Summer Program in Scotland/Ireland
"Excuse me, do you know how to get to Bristol Square?" I ask. The gentleman in his thirties replies, "Why of course, you continue down this street, make a left, make a right and you'll be there." "Thank you," I answer. I am about to continue skipping along when he asks me where I am from. I tell him that I am from Canada. "Canada…I have a brother who lives there" he replies. So on we talked about my reason for being in Scotland, sites to visit and things to do. When we finally say goodbye, I feel warm inside, because every stranger to whom I have spoken here talks to me as if we are old friends.

Ljublj, Slovenia Vittoria Bellissimo Works in Slovenia on an IAESTE Student Exchange
This summer I participated in an IAESTE student exchange to Maribor, Slovenia. Slovenia is a small country in Eastern Europe bordering Austria, Hungary, Croatia and Italy. It is a beautiful country, often referred to as a miniature Europe, because it contains mountains, coast, rivers, plains, etc. I worked for the Technical Faculty of the University of Maribor, creating GPS maps of Maribor, and of Ljubljana, the capital city.
