Martin Coursol, Slovenia: An Eye Opener

Before working in Slovenia I had previously been to Europe on my own. I had the opportunity to visit the UK with the Working Holiday Program which facilitated my stay by allowing me to travel and work my way through the country. This time using Employment Services at the University of Montréal I found a six-month placement in Slovenia through a Canadian NGO called CANADEM. As a Political Science graduate, I was happy to have the opportunity to work as a Junior Professional Consultant for the International Organization for Migration. There, I was able to participate and organize conferences and seminars to discuss strategies to counter human trafficking in Europe. These conferences provided a forum for the ambassadors of different countries to discuss the current issues and problems related to human trafficking and smuggling. Through these experiences I was able to learn a great deal about the subject.

I arrived in the Spring of 2003 and spent the months of June to December working in Slovenia. However, my experience in Slovenia was not all work. Throughout this time, I had an excellent cultural experience, and met many interesting young people. Working in the city of Ljubljana, I found the people there to be very friendly and accepting of Canadians in general. The night life was superb and it was not hard at all to make friends. I had a fantastic experience!
