Lennox Island First Nation Water Supply Upgrade
Environmental Assessment to Continue as a Comprehensive Study

OTTAWA - August 9, 2006 - The Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of the Environment and Minister responsible for the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency, has determined that a comprehensive study is the most appropriate level of environmental assessment for the proposed Lennox Island First Nation Water Supply Upgrade Project in Prince Edward Island.

The Minister based her decision on the report and recommendation submitted by the responsible authority, Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC). The report contains information on the scope of the proposed water supply upgrade project, the factors to be considered by the environmental assessment, public comments submitted to the responsible authority, the potential of the project to cause adverse environmental effects and the ability of the comprehensive study to address issues relating to the project.

“I am confident that a comprehensive study can address the issues related to the Lennox Island First Nation Water Supply Upgrade Project. I look forward to receiving a completed comprehensive study report from Indian and Northern Affairs Canada,” said Minister Ambrose.

The proposed project consists of a water supply upgrade in the Lennox Island First Nation community to provide the flow and volume of water required for fire protection. The design of the water supply system includes new large-diameter water mains, several new high volume water wells, a new pump control building with standby chlorination, and a potable water storage tower.

INAC will now continue the comprehensive study and submit its final report to the Minister of the Environment. At that time, the public will have an opportunity to comment on the findings and recommendations of the report before the Minister renders her decision.
