Nunavut Family & Community Literacy Development Project

The Nunavut Literacy Council (NLC) will undertake a project to increase the capacity of individuals and organizations within communities to address literacy issues and needs within their community. The NLC will deliver the Family Literacy Development Workshop and/or the Tools for Community Building Workshop in 3 communities in Nunavut. They will offer a regional family literacy workshop for practitioners. Also, they will develop plain language documents on learning disabilities. They will raise awareness of learning disabilities among parents, literacy practitioners, community support workers, and community health workers. The NLC will develop the workshops based on the needs of communities and will also develop resources such as a culturally relevant song-rhyme book, fact sheets and resource lists to address the needs of adult learners and families. The project includes the launch of a promotional campaign designed to encourage families to speak, read and write in their first language. All aspects of the project, such as the impact of the campaigns and the workshops, will be evaluated and a final report will be submitted to the NLS.

Tools for Change Youth Project

The Nunavut Literacy Council (NLC) will pilot a Tools for Community Building workshop for youth. The workshop will provide representatives from youth groups across the Kitikmeot Region of Nunavut with the skills they need to design and deliver their own literacy and literacy related projects in their home communities to youth at risk. The objectives of the project are 1) to increase the awareness of literacy as an issue that significantly affects youth, 2) to provide support and training to youth groups within the Kitikmeot Region, 3) to provide a venue for youth to network and discuss literacy issues affecting their communities and, 4) to provide a forum for the NLC to explore ways to more effectively support youth across Nunavut. The workshop will be evaluated and a final report will be submitted to the NLS.
