Alphabétisme au Yukon 2002-2004

The Association franco-yukonnaise is the only organization in the territory dedicated to improving the literacy skills of the French language community. Through the support of the National Literacy Secretariat and Canadian Heritage's Interdepartmental Partnership with Official Language Communities, the Association will work with local community organizations on activities to increase the literacy skills of adults and families in the Yukon. To do this, the Association will develop a public awareness campaign including pamphlets and posters to promote literacy; raise awareness with stakeholders in the education, health and social service sectors; produce a family literacy information kit for new parents which will include books for parents and children and resource information; hold Mother Goose and Storysacks workshops for parents and children; and through a tour of the communities of Mayo, Keno, Haines Junction, Dawson and Faro will recruit volunteers and evaluate the francophone content in the local libraries in those communities and make recommendations to Yukon Libraries. The project will increase awareness of French language literacy issues in the Yukon, offer parents opportunities to participate in family literacy activities with their children and recruit tutors and learners. An evaluation will be undertaken using questionnaires, evaluation forms, interviews and observation.

Yukon College will gather information from employers, First Nations, government, organizations, and youth from across the territory on topics such as current and future work opportunities, barriers to employment, strategies for preparing for interviews, employer expectations and strategies for balancing work and life. This will be compiled into a guide that will also include testimonials from youth, First Nations leaders and employers. Yukon Community Literacy Development Project

Yukon Learn, the territorial literacy coalition, will undertake a project to build capacity in Yukon communities in order to sustain ongoing literacy activity. The objectives are to provide literacy practitioners with ongoing support and resources, identify training needs of practitioners and work with the Department of Advanced Education to meet these needs, provide a forum for practitioners to share information and resources and facilitate literacy activities that encourage the engagement of all Yukon communities. The NWT Literacy Council, who have been very successful in their community development work, will provide mentorship for the project and will facilitate a Yukon Literacy Community Development Workshop for literacy practitioners and stakeholders as the first step in building collaborative relationships and sharing resources. Yukon Learn will continue to assist local communities throughout the territory in the development of their literacy programs and providing support for program planning and evaluation, proposal writing and fundraising. Yukon Learn will also develop and distribute a literacy calendar that includes photographs on learning and literacy from each Yukon community and listings of literacy events throughout the year. The project will be evaluated through ongoing internal reviews and through participants' feedback. A final report will be submitted to the NLS.
