Description:
The Wild Animal and Plant Protection and Regulation of International and Inter-provincial Trade Act controls international trade and inter-provincial transport in wild animals and plants, their parts and products in order to better conserve Canadian and foreign species, and to protect Canadian ecosystems from the introduction of harmful wild species. The Act prohibits the importation of wildlife taken illegally from another country, and implements Canada’s obligations under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). The act is administered in cooperation with other federal departments (Fisheries and Oceans Canada, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, Canada Customs and Revenue Agency and the RCMP) and provincial/territorial wildlife agencies.
