LRTAP Biomonitoring Database: Algoma and Muskoka Regional Long Term Monitoring

Description of Information Holding:

This relational database (ORACLE format) contains georeferenced information on all aspects of the Biomonitoring program in Algoma and Muskoka. This includes physical characteristics (>15 variables) and chemical characteristics (~24 variables) for approximately 480 small lakes and wetlands which describe the aquatic habitat in these sites. Overlain on these habitat characteristics are data on waterfowl (species occurrence, breeding success, habitat use) and the types of aquatic food webs (as affected by fish and amphibian occurrence) on which they rely. Other biological data (e.g. aquatic invertebrate communities) are contained in related information holdings (e.g. Food Chain Monitoring Program) for selected lakes. Chemical and biological data are collected at intervals suitable for trend analysis.

Project Title:

Long Range Transport of Air Pollutants (LRTAP) Biomonitoring

Description of Project:

The project monitors habitat suitability (notably food webs), populations and breeding success of waterfowl and loons on small lakes and wetlands in central and northeastern Ontario (Algoma, Muskoka, Sudbury, Killarney) to determine if they are responding to reductions in acid precipitation. (See also LRTAP Research and Loon Surveys Projects.) In addition to each information holding, there is a separate file for weather data associated with the project, which consists of approximately 5 megabytes of SAS files.

Purpose of the Project:

To determine if waterfowl and loon populations in central and northeastern Ontario are responding to reductions in acid precipitation.
