Is the federal or provincial government responsible for vehicle safety?
Transport Canada is responsible for enforcing the Motor Vehicle Safety Act. The act covers all equipment on vehicles that is supplied by the manufacturer. The Motor Vehicle Safety Act applies only to original equipment as it is manufactured. Safety concerns following the repair of your vehicle come under the jurisdiction of the provincial government.

Whom do I contact if my car has a safety-related defect?
If you suspect that your car has a safety-related defect that is the result of the vehicle's manufacturer (i.e. not caused by repairs after the car was built), phone Transport Canada Road Safety at 1-800-333-0510; or write to:

Generally, safety-related defects include:

  • seat belt problems
  • suspension failures
  • electrical shorts
  • fuel leaks
  • sudden steering or braking loss
  • trailer coupling failures
  • stalling
  • disconnected or stuck accelerators
  • corrosion affecting safe operation
  • problems with original axles, drive
  • shafts, seats and seat recliners,
  • defrosters and windshield wipers.

How do I find out if my car has been recalled?
If you believe that your car has been recalled, but have not received notification from the manufacturer, you may wish to contact your local dealer. Or, you can contact Transport Canada's Road Safety Defects and Recalls number at 1-800-333-0510.

If I buy a used car how do I make sure I am notified of recalls?
If you purchase a used car, it is imperative that you inform the manufacturer of the model and serial number of the car, as well as relevant personal information about yourself (i.e. name, address, telephone number). The address of the manufacturer may be found in the vehicle handbook or at your local dealer.

Whom do I contact if my car has a safety problem caused by a repair?
Perceived safety concerns caused by the negligence or incompetence of the repairer may be mediated by the Investigation Branch of Consumer Services of the Government of British Columbia. They can be contacted at:

Where can I find regulations and procedures that deal with airbag safety?
Transport Canada publishes a brochure titled "What You Should Know About Air Bags (TP12843) which outlines risks and safety measures associated with airbags. For a copy of this publication and/or more information on airbag safety, contact the Road Safety and Motor Vehicle Regulation branch of Transport Canada regional office at (613) 993-9851 or 1-800-333-0510.

Where can I find regulations and procedures dealing with safety restraints for children?
Transport Canada publishes a brochure entitled "Keep Kids Safe: Car-Time 1-2-3-4 (TP13511E), which outlines Transport Canada's safety regulations and procedures for child car safety. For a copy of this publication and/or more information on child restraints, contact the Road Safety and Motor Vehicle Regulation branch of Transport Canada at (613) 998-8616 or 1-800-333-0371, or your Consumer and Corporate Affairs Canada regional office at (604) 666-5006.

Where can I find information and statistics about safety restraints?
Transport Canada maintains a wealth of information and statistics dealing with the usage and effectiveness of seatbelts and other safety restraints. To obtain copies of Transport Canada studies and programs dealing with seatbelts and safety restraints, call toll-free 1-800-333-0371.

Where can I find copies of Transport Canada acts and regulations dealing with safety restraints?
All of Transport Canada's acts and regulations are available to the public, and may be found at the Transport Canada regional library and at public libraries. Also, all of Transport Canada's acts and regulations are located at http://www.tc.gc.ca/roadsafety/reg/reg_e.htm.

Whom do I contact to find out about transporting dangerous goods by road?
Transport Canada has very strict regulations regarding transporting dangerous goods by road. Before transporting goods, you must contact an inspector at Transport Canada at (604) 666-2955.
