Is the federal or provincial government
responsible for vehicle safety?
Transport Canada is responsible for enforcing the Motor
Vehicle Safety Act. The act covers all equipment on vehicles that is
supplied by the manufacturer. The Motor Vehicle Safety Act applies only to
original equipment as it is manufactured. Safety concerns following the repair
of your vehicle come under the jurisdiction of the provincial government.
Whom do I contact if my car has a safety-related defect?
If you suspect that your car has a safety-related defect that is the result of
the vehicle's manufacturer (i.e. not caused by repairs after the car was built),

Generally, safety-related defects include:
- seat belt problems
- suspension failures
- electrical shorts
- fuel leaks
- sudden steering or braking loss
- trailer coupling failures
- stalling
- disconnected or stuck accelerators
- corrosion affecting safe operation
- problems with original axles, drive
- shafts, seats and seat recliners,
- defrosters and windshield wipers.
How do I find out if my car has been recalled?
If you believe that your car has been recalled, but have not received
notification from the manufacturer, you may wish to contact your local dealer.

If I buy a used car how do I make sure I am notified of
recalls?
If you purchase a used car, it is imperative that you inform the manufacturer of
the model and serial number of the car, as well as relevant personal information
about yourself (i.e. name, address, telephone number). The address of the
manufacturer may be found in the vehicle handbook or at your local dealer.
Whom do I contact if my car has a safety problem caused by
a repair?
Perceived safety concerns caused by the negligence or incompetence of the
repairer may be mediated by the Investigation Branch of Consumer Services of the

airbag safety?
Transport Canada publishes a brochure titled "What You Should Know About
Air Bags (TP12843) which outlines risks and safety measures associated with
