What are the rules regarding importing a vehicle from the United States?
If you plan to import a car, it is imperative that you telephone the Registrar of Imported Vehicles at 1-888-848-8240 beforehand.

Can I import a motorcycle from the United States?
Yes, Transport Canada does allow many motorcycles to be imported from the United States. The procedure for doing so is exactly the same as for importing passenger cars. For further information about importing a motorcycle, telephone the Registrar of Imported Vehicles at 1-888-848-8240.

Can I import a trailer from the United States?
Yes, in many cases you can import a trailer from the United States. Before doing so, however, you must contact the Registrar of Imported Vehicles at 1-888-848-8240.

If I am an American moving to Canada and am bringing my car, what are the regulations for importation?
If you are moving permanently to Canada from the United States, your vehicle(s) must still meet the regulations for admission that Transport Canada sets. For more information contact the Registrar of Imported Vehicles at 1-888-848-8240.

If I am an American working or living in Canada temporarily and my car is inadmissible for importation, can I still use it in Canada?
Yes, if you are working or living in Canada temporarily, you may use your car in Canada provided you sign a declaration stating that you agree not to sell or give away the car in Canada. To register the car for use in Canada you must first contact Canada Customs at (604) 666-0545 or at 1-800-461-9999.

If I win a vehicle as a prize or am given one as a gift in the U.S., what are the regulations for importing it into Canada?
Transport Canada's regulations for vehicle importation into Canada do not distinguish between vehicles won as prizes or given as gifts. Therefore, you must still meet the regulations for importation that Transport Canada sets. For more information contact the Registrar of Imported Vehicles at 1-888-848-8240

How do I determine if my car meets Transport Canada's regulations for importation? 
Some vehicles from the United States do not meet specific Canadian safety requirements and are therefore inadmissible to Canada. However, there are vehicles that can have modifications made that will allow them to be admitted into Canada (for example daytime running lights). Transport Canada produces a list of vehicles that are admissible from the United States. For a list of these vehicles, contact the Registrar of Imported Vehicles at 1-888-848-8240.

Where do I take my car to get inspected to ensure that it meets Canadian safety standards?
Contact the Registrar of Imported Vehicles for inspection information or visit their web-site at http://www.riv.ca. Following those modifications the Registrar of Imported Vehicles will clear your automobile for entry into Canada. For more information contact Canada Customs at (604) 666-0545. Can I purchase tires in the United States for personal use in Canada?
Yes, provided that the tires have a United States Department of Transport (DOT) symbol on the tires, you may import them into Canada. Moreover, you must declare the tires at Canada Customs and pay the applicable taxes and/or duties. For more information about taxes and/or duties, contact Canada Customs at (604) 666-0545.

Can I import a car from a country other than the United States?
No. Vehicles manufactured for sale in countries other than Canada and the United States do not comply with the requirements of the Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Act, CANNOT be altered to comply and CANNOT be imported into Canada. The only exceptions to this rule are vehicles fifteen (15) years old or older as determined by the month and year in which the vehicle was manufactured and buses manufactured before January 1, 1971.
