I would like to thank all of the members of the North York community for working together to help increase understanding of the first six years of child development in their community. The support of the members of the Early Years Action Group — who have been active since 1996 in increasing awareness about the importance of the early years and working with their community to ensure that all children enter school ready for successful learning — is greatly appreciated.

I would like to acknowledge Drs. Magdalena Janus and Dan Offord, the developers of the Early Development Instrument at the Canadian Centre for Studies of Children at Risk at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. They have been integral to the successful implementation and analysis of the EDI data.

I would also like to express my gratitude to the parents, children and teachers who took the time to speak with interviewers and complete questionnaires. This work would not have been possible without your help.

Appreciation is also extended to all the members of the community research team: Christina Norris from Human Resources Development Canada and our colleagues at Statistics Canada, Mia Dauvergne, Tamara Knighton, and Hélène Lavoie.

Finally, many thanks to the Applied Research Branch Publication Team and to everyone at the Applied Research Branch who worked with me to complete this project.
