airports3.jpg (31381 bytes)Regional and local airports handle regularly scheduled traffic and have important local or regional significance, but do not qualify as NAS airports. Between April 1, 1995 and the year 2000, Transport Canada Pacific Region has transfered the ownership of 19 airports to local control.

Regional or local airports are defined as those sites:
  • whose scheduled passenger traffic is less than 200,000 a year for three consecutive years
  • not the national capital or a provincial or territorial capital
  • not classified as Arctic or remote airports
  • where there is currently some form of ongoing federal financial involvement with scheduled passenger traffic

Regional/Local Airports transferred to local (other) ownership and control at December 31, 2000 include:

  • Abbotsford
  • Boundary Bay
  • Campbell River
  • Castlegar
  • Comox (DND)
  • Cranbrook
  • Dawson Creek
  • Fort Nelson
  • Fort St. John
  • Kamloops
  • Nanaimo
  • Pitt Meadows
  • Powell River
  • Prince Rupert
  • Quesnel
  • Smithers
  • Terrace
  • Tofino
  • Williams Lake
