Civil Aviation Medicine is a small, specialized branch of Transport Canada tasked
with advising the Minister on aeromedical matters. A major role of Pacific Region's aviation
medical staff is to advise Personnel Licensing on the medical fitness of
aviation document holders. This is accomplished, in the Pacific Region, through the
assessment of some 12,000 medical examination reports annually. These medical examinations
are performed by designated Civil Aviation Medical Examiners on pilots, air traffic
controllers and flight engineers. Civil Aviation Medical Examiners are community
physicians located throughout the Pacific Region, appointed by the Minister to perform
these medical examinations.
Mandate
To advise Transport Canada Civil Aviation and the aviation industry on
aeromedical aspects of aviation safety, and to perform civil aviation medicine
research and development.
Civil Aviation Medicine is responsible for:
Medical Assessments
Licensed pilots and air traffic controllers who are assessed unfit can appeal to the Civil
Aviation Tribunal, where an aviation doctor takes the role of expert witness.
Occupational Health and Education
In addition, the branch conducts aeromedical training session for air crew, flight
instructors, Transport Canada inspectors and designated aviation medical examiners.
Investigation
Aviation medical staff support official investigation agencies such as the National
Transportation Safety Board in the investigation of human performance factors pertaining
to fatal aircraft accidents.
