The Aerodromes and Air Navigation Branch is responsible for the regulatory program for aerodromes and air navigation services in Canada

Aerodrome Safety is responsible for inspecting and certifying airports and aerodromes in Canada, from large metropolitan airports to single strip
community airfields. Branch specialists develop rules, standards and procedures for all aspects of airside safety, including land use and zoning, and evaluate the impact of noise on residential communities, and wildlife. Based on factors such as traffic volume and traffic patterns, technical and engineering specialists evaluate requirements for maintenance, lighting, roadway markings, emergency response and firefighting services.

Air Navigation Services is responsible for issues involved with airspace utilization and classification, levels of service for Air Navigation Service facilities and services including weather, navigation, radar and communication services. Branch specialists conduct Audits and Inspection of service providers; randomly monitor the service providers; issue fire protection notams; coordinate and notam special use airspace for air shows and aviation events and respond to customer concerns and complaints.

  • Conduct airport and aerodrome inspections and audits
  • Assess safety of airport operations and zoning
  • Review and approve Airport Operations Manuals
  • Issue Airport Certificates
  • Assess obstacles such as antennas, towers, cable crossings, and buildings, against marking and lighting standards
  • Assess and develop noise abatement procedures
  • Provide an Aeronautical Information Service and NOTAMS relating to all aerodromes
  • Inspect and review airport emergency response capability
  • Assist the aviation community to understand regulatory and safety requirements relating to aerodromes
The following services are available from Richmond:
  • Conduct Audits and Inspections to verify compliance with provision of CARs, Part VIII
  • Conduct Mandatory Frequency Inspections
  • Conduct Risk assessments
  • Conduct Aeronautical Studies
  • Provide regulatory advise
  • Issue NOTAMS regarding special use airspace and closures
  • Define and recommend airspace changes
  • Maintain close liaison NAV CANADA and other service providers
  • Follow up Aviation occurrences
  • Monitor and evaluate ANS level of service in the Pacific Region
  • Participate in special investigations
  • Conduct Audits on automatic weather systems
