How do you turn cookies on?

Your cookies must be turned on for you to complete your transactions. This is something you must do on your computer, through your software.

All browsers are configured a little differently, so you should check the Internet options within your browser software for ways to enable cookies.

  • If you're using Internet Explorer version 4, click on View, Internet Options, Advanced, and ensure you accept cookies.
  • If you're using Internet Explorer version 5, click on Tools, Internet Options, Security, and Custom Level, and ensure that you accept cookies.

How do you turn Java applets and JavaScript on?

By default, Java applets and JavaScript are turned on in your browser.

We recommend that Java applets and JavaScript be kept on while using CCRA services, although you can still access our Web site services with Java applets and JavaScript turned off.

To verify that Java applets and JavaScript are turned on, please see the instructions in our online technical manual.

What if my browser doesn't meet the security requirement?

When you're ready to perform a transaction, our servers will perform an encryption check to verify that the browser you're using meets our security requirements.

If your browser fails the encryption test, go to the Microsoft download page, where you will be able to download the appropriate browser. It's your responsibility to download and install the necessary browser software. If you don't have a secure browser installed, we cannot accept your transactions.

Visiting a secure Web site

When you're in a secure Web site, a Lock symbol appears at the bottom right of your screen. This shows that data is being encrypted.

However, to determine what level of encryption your version of the software provides, you have to check the properties function of your browser. At the top of your browser screen, click the Help menu item, and then select About Internet Explorer. This screen will tell you the version of browser you're using and the level of security you have. If this screen doesn't indicate 128-bit encryption, you should upgrade your browser.

Remember that you may not have to download the complete browser package. You may only need to upgrade it, which takes much less time. Below is a link to get these upgrades:

  • Downloading 128-bit Microsoft Internet Explorer
    1. Go to the Microsoft Web site.
    2. Depending on your computer's operating system, select the appropriate 128-bit encryption software.
    3. Choose your language.
    4. Carefully read the information presented, click on Download, and follow the instructions.
    5. Install the software (or upgrade it) following Microsoft's instructions.

Encryption

Encryption is a way of encoding information before it's transmitted over the Internet. Your encrypted data will be decoded on our protected server.

We use encryption to ensure that no unauthorized party will access your personal information. Data from your computer is encrypted before being sent. This alters your data into a format that can be safely transmitted over the Internet. Once the data is encrypted, only the CCRA can read your data.

When you're complete a transaction with us, our servers will perform an encryption check to verify that the browser you're using meets this security requirement.

If your browser fails the encryption test, go to the Netscape download page, where you will be able to download the appropriate browser. It's your responsibility to download and install the necessary browser software. If you don't have a secure browser installed, we cannot accept your Internet-filed return.

If the key has one large tooth, it means that you have 40-bit encryption software and you should upgrade to 128-bit encryption. If the key has two large teeth, it means you're using 128-bit encryption.

  • Downloading a 128-bit Netscape browser
    1. Go to the Netscape Web site.
    2. Choose your language.
    3. Depending on your computer's operating system, select the appropriate 128-bit encryption software. Netscape calls this "128-bit Strong Encryption."
    4. Install the software (or upgrade it) following Netscape's instructions.
