Module 4: Complete a Basic Tax Return

If you are filing a tax return for the first time, you may have some questions or need some help. There are several ways you can get answers or help. We have already discussed some of these:

  • You can visit our Web site (see Links).
  • You can look up information on a specific line number of the General Income Tax and Benefit Return, in the General Income Tax and Benefit Guide, or on our Web site at Completing a tax return.
  • You can call us or use T.I.P.S. (see Contacts).
  • If you are planning to use certified NETFILEGlossary term software to prepare your return, you may be able to get help and guidance from within the software.
  • If a tax professional will be preparing or filing your return, then he or she should be able to help with questions.

Now, lets take a look at a sample tax return, for Paul.

A few days later, Paul was at his uncle's house to discuss and complete his tax return.

"There are different forms in the forms book," said Paul. "Which one should I use?"

"We will work with the General Income Tax and Benefit Return and a Schedule 1 form," answered his uncle.

"How will I know what to fill in?" asked Paul.

"I will help you, but every part of the form is labelled," his uncle replied, "usually with a line number. We will fill in the lines that are right for you as we go. If we need to, we can look in the guide to get more information on how to fill in a line."

"So, because each line has a number, we can look it up in the guide?" asked Paul.

"That's right," said his uncle, "now lets get started. Do you have your T4s Red Notebook Icon?".
