The Vehicle Fuel Economy Label in the United States

The fuel economy label in the United States is required by law. It has a standardized design and must be affixed to the window of a new motor vehicle. The following information appears on the vehicle label:

  • The city fuel economy in miles-per-U.S. gallon.
  • The highway fuel economy in miles-per-U.S. gallon.
  • Specific information about the vehicle's make, model, engine size and transmission.
  • Values representing the fuel economy range expected with the particular vehicle model, and with other models of this size class.
  • The estimated annual fuel cost, based on an annual distance travelled of 15 000 miles city driving and a basic fuel price in dollars-per-U.S. gallon.

For more information on the U.S. fuel economy label visit the website at: www.fueleconomy.gov
