Historical Milestones
In 1977, Transport Canada developed data guidelines to
ensure that fuel consumption data was produced in a consistent manner. The guidelines
were based upon some of the procedures used by the U.S. Government for fuel economy
data collection. The motor vehicle industry began to submit model type fuel consumption
information and production volumes.
In 1986, Transport Canada introduced a data system designed
to collect more detailed motor vehicle fuel economy and engine technology information.
The data system was designed to gather the detailed level of data that would be required
to support a legislated fuel consumption program under the Motor Vehicle Fuel Consumption
Standards Act. In an effort to reduce the burden of data collection, the system design
was based upon the procedures used by the U.S. Government for fuel economy data collection.
The Canadian data system is called the Vehicle Fuel Economy Information System (VFEIS).
