Postal Program -- Prohibited and controlled goods

Before you import goods into Canada by mail, you should check to make sure they're not prohibited or controlled.

Prohibited goods include pornography, child pornography, dangerous materials, alcoholic beverages, narcotics, and offensive weapons.

  • You cannot import prohibited goods under any circumstances.
  • If we discover prohibited items in the mail, we'll dispose of them.
    • You may also face criminal charges.

Controlled goods include firearms (see D19-13-2) and items made from endangered plant and animal species (see D19-7-1 and our list of related Web sites).

  • These goods are subject to import controls.
  • We'll hold these items and inform you by letter that you need proper import documents before we can release them.
    • If you cannot provide the proper import documents and if you agree to abandon the goods, we'll dispose of them or, if possible, return them to the sender.
