Canada's climate is changing in response to increased emissions of greenhouse gases. Observing and recording ice phenology the freeze and thaw dates of water bodies can show how aquatic ecosystems are responding to environmental change. Environment Canada is looking for new volunteers to help fill the gaps in the monitoring system to give a more complete picture of how ice cover is changing and what the potential effects could be.
Sign up for IceWatch!
Choose a body of water that you can monitor on a daily basis and ideally for several years. This area can be an entire body of freshwater, an inlet in a lake, the area between two points on a lake or a stretch of river. Record your observations on the special IceWatch Observation form, available on the IceWatch Web site, and submit your observations at the end of the recording period. Watch for the ice to completely form over the entire area. This is called "ice on". Then record when the ice completely disappears from the entire area called "ice on". This may happen several times throughout the season so it's important to record all of the dates.
Your observations should be made from the exact same place and in the exact same way. Always take your measurements from a safe distance. Choose a spot where you can easily observe your selected area while keeping your feet firmly planted on the ground.
For more information on how to become and observer and to download your Ice Observation Form, visit the IceWatch Web site.

This series of seven posters show the regional impacts of climate change in Canada. You will find important information about the science of climate change and how impacts for each region. You will also find ideas to encourage individual action and ways to adapt to these changing environmental conditions.
