Today's News from the Globe and Mail
Monday Morning Manager Harvey Schachter's guide on how to handle everything from overflowing e-mail to meeting overload
Harvey Schachter (Monday, November 27, 2006)
Main item: The ultimate leadership testToronto advertising agency president Jay Bertram walked into a staff meeting in July, 2005, and issued a tough challenge -- to himself. He distributed a three-point survey to staff, asking them to rate the firm, TBWA/Toronto, and his own leadership, and then vowed if he couldn't significantly improve his score in 10 months he would resign. The idea had come from consultant David Maister's claim that managers don't have the courage to make themselves accountable to staff for their own performance, rather than simply trying to hold subordinates responsible. ''I did it to prove I was capable of leading them,'' Mr. Bertram says.

Oral Promises May Not Count
Norman Grosman (November 7, 2006)
During the hiring process with my most recent employer, a number of promises or representations were made to me which, somehow, never found their way into my written offer. People have moved on, and my employer refuses to honour those commitments citing an “entire agreement” clause in my contract. What are my rights?

The Toronto Star
The graying of Canada's workforce
Janis Foord Kirk (November 11, 2006)
A gas station on a main thoroughfare not far from where I live is recruiting at the moment. A large sign on the sidewalk reads: "Retired? Looking for PT work? Apply within."

What To Do About My Criminal Record?
Mark Swartz (November 21, 2006)
Dear Mark: A few years back I was found guilty of a victimless crime. Now I'm finding it hard to get bonded, work for a bank, or even pass a clearance test to serve as a volunteer. Are there steps I can take to make the situation less dire for me?

I haven't looked for work in years. What do I need to know to be successful today?
Bob Rosner (November 21, 2006)
DEAR WW: Whenever I think of a job hunt, I'm reminded of a pair of crutches that were in our attic when I was growing up. With three active kids, those crutches got used a lot. Then one day my mom decided it was time to get rid of them. You guessed it within weeks I had a sprained ankle and we had to go out and get a new pair of crutches.
