Rail Transportation
Passenger traffic declined in 1998, to about 4.0 million passengers
from 4.1 million in the previous year. Passenger-kilometres followed
the same trend, dropping to 1.46 billion from 1.51 billion
in 1997.
As Table 13-1 shows, VIA Rail carried the large majority of
passenger traffic in 1998, with 3.65 million passengers and about
1.38 billion passenger-kilometres. The Quebec-Windsor corridor
continued to account for about 85 per cent of passengers for the
Class I carrier. VIA's eastern services carried slightly more
of the remaining traffic than did its western services.
Algoma Central Railway, BC Rail, Ontario Northland, and the
Quebec, North Shore and Labrador Railway are the four Class
II carriers reporting intercity passenger statistics. In
aggregate, according to reported statistics, these railways carried
334,280 passengers and registered about 80.2 million passenger-kilometres.
