Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora


The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) sets controls on the international trade and movement of animal and plant species that have been, or may be, threatened due to excessive commercial exploitation.

Environment Canada (EC) is the lead agency responsible for implementing CITES on behalf of the federal government.

Within EC, the Canadian Wildlife Service (CWS) administers CITES and interacts with provincial, territorial and other federal agencies.

New Procedure for Quebec Residents
Effective November 1, 2005, applications for import or export permits of CITES listed animals and plants should be sent to Environment Canada's National CITES Management Authority Office in Gatineau, Quebec. This site provides the application forms required by Environment Canada. You can also phone 1-800-668-6767 to have an application form mailed or faxed to you. Please note that CITES permits for marine species are still issued by Fisheries and Oceans Canada.
Please send applications involving only furs or fur garments to Environment Canada Quebec Region - in this case please request regular application forms by calling 1-800-668-6767.
