1. Chat Overview

Andy Mitchell, Secretary of State (Rural Development) (Federal Economic Development Initiative for Northern Ontario) was the focus of a friendly grilling by young Canadians living in rural and remote areas of Canada. The 25 pre-selected participants questioned Mr. Mitchell for more than an hour during the on-line chat as part of the preparation for the Rural Youth Forum and National Rural Conference in Charlottetown, PEI, on April 4-6, 2002. Most of the questions revolved around employment in the broadest sense. How can well-educated youth be drawn back to their rural communities? What partnerships can be created between First Nations and the Government of Canada to revitalize local economies? Are there federal programs available to young entrepreneurs? How can the government keep and maintain resources for women in rural Canada? Where does one find a listing of the programs offered by the Government of Canada to rural and remote youth? Mr. Mitchell responded to each question. Click here to view the transcript.

It was an excellent opportunity to ask questions to the Secretary of State, to share thoughts, and, to let him know what is being done to bring positive changes in communities.
