GOVERNMENT OF CANADA SUPPORTS RURAL DEVELOPMENT IN NEW BRUNSWICK
MONCTON, NEW BRUNSWICK, January 24, 2003 - The Honourable Claudette Bradshaw, Minister of Labour, M.P. for Moncton-Riverview-Dieppe, is pleased to announce, on behalf of the Honourable Andy Mitchell, Secretary of State (Rural Development) (Federal Economic Development Initiative for Northern Ontario) $10,875 in Government of Canada funding from the Canadian Rural Partnership's Rural Development Initiative for a research project in rural New Brunswick.
University of Moncton's Canadian Institute for Research on Regional Development will conduct a research study that will help assess and determine at what point a rural community is considered innovative and productive. The research findings will help evaluate the potential development activity within a community. The communities of Kedgwick and Shediac have been chosen by the Institute to conduct the study.
"Determining the degree of innovation and productivity of a rural community is crucial to the social, economic and environmental development of that community," says Ms. Bradshaw. "I am pleased that Kedgwick and Shediac have been chosen to carry out this important study."
The tools produced through the study will help communities facing declining population and infrastructure problems assess the impact of potential development.
"Government departments, development agencies and professionals working in rural development will certainly benefit from developing these innovation and productivity assessment tools," says Mr. Mitchell. "The Government of Canada is pleased to be part of this research project."
The Rural Development Initiative supports rural and remote communities in creating and adopting sustainable community development strategies that will strengthen their ability to build local solutions to local challenges. The Rural Development Initiative is the second funding program under the Canadian Rural Partnership and will provide funding in the amount of $2.8 million to March 31, 2003. Rural Development Initiative projects support the Agricultural Policy Framework (APF).
