RURAL NEW BRUNSWICK FOCUS OF GOVERNMENT OF CANADA REPORT
NEW BRUNSWICK - November 7, 2005 - Housing in rural areas just outside of urban centres in New Brunswick is very cost effective. That is one of the findings in a new report looking at rural parts of the province. The recently released research report by the Government of Canada is one of 14 profiles being developed—one for every province and territory in Canada, and one for the country as a whole.
The Government of Canada’s Rural Secretariat has produced the reports to enhance the knowledge of rural conditions and how they change from community to community. This information will be valuable to governments, research and policy experts as they develop programs, services and activities that can make a difference in rural Canada.
“The Rural New Brunswick Profile shows there are different challenges when it comes to economic, educational, social and health care situations in rural areas, there is no one size fits all approach,” said Wayne Easter, Parliamentary Secretary with special emphasis on Rural Development. “We all have to keep that in mind when we consider the appropriate actions.”
The research revealed that in rural areas surrounding cities, just 12.2 percent of household owners were spending greater than 30 percent of their income on shelter. The findings also revealed that almost half of the province’s population lives in rural and small town communities and 40 percent of rural New Brunswick residents speak French most often at home.
A Statistics Canada method was used dividing rural New Brunswick into four types of rural, depending on how strongly they are economically and socially influenced by urban areas. The authors of this report looked at Statistics Canada Census data from 1991, 1996 and 2001 to examine 20 indicators that reflect conditions in different areas.
This study was carried out by the Canadian Rural Partnership’s Rural Secretariat with help from Statistics Canada. The Rural Secretariat is a part of the Government of Canada that focuses on rural issues.
