Rural Youth in Action: Lessons in Community Leadership

As part of the Government of Canada’s efforts to continue the dialogue with youth, the 2003 National Rural Youth Conference, "Young Canadians, Leaders of Today and Tomorrow" was held in Orillia/Ramara, Ontario from May 2-4, 2003.

This event brought together over sixty young Canadians between the ages of 18 to 29 from rural, remote and northern communities across the country. The conference provided youth with a valuable opportunity to come together to discuss their roles as innovators in their communities. It also enabled participants to develop strategies and acquire the skills and tools to increase youth leadership involvement in their communities. Results from the conference will be used to influence future government initiatives targeted at youth.

The objectives of the 2003 National Rural Youth Conference were to:
  • obtain youth’s perspective on how young Canadians can become agents for innovation in rural, remote and northern communities in Canada;

  • provide young Canadians from rural, remote and northern areas with an opportunity to develop leadership skills to empower them to contribute more effectively to their communities;

  • provide information on various government tools, programs and services that are available to youth;

  • report on the progress of and promote the National Rural Youth Network.
The main topics of discussion at the conference were: "Innovation", "Partnerships" and "Entrepreneurship."

To participate in the 2003 National Rural Youth Conference, the delegates were asked to prepare and submit a brief proposal outlining a community issue that they feel is important and one they would like to become involved in. Participants were also asked to solicit a mentor from their community who would provide guidance on their community projects and monitor the implementation of the skills and the tools youth acquired during the 2003 National Rural Youth Conference. A number of the proposals were used as case studies during group discussions at the conference. Lessons learned on the youth community projects were shared at the 2004 National Rural Conference.

The publication is entitled "Rural Youth in Action: Lessons in Community Leadership".
