Canadian Rural Partnership
Information Outreach to Rural Canadians

The Government of Canada is making a special effort to reach Canadians in rural and remote areas.

Through community newspapers, radio stations, the Internet and federal points of public access, information about federal programs and services is being made accessible to citizens in rural and remote areas of the country. The outreach activities also function as a way for rural Canadians to participate in the government's Rural Dialogue and influence programs, services and policies that affect their communities.

  • The Government of Canada has a rural Web site www.rural.gc.ca – with up-to-date information on the Canadian Rural Partnership. The site hosts the Rural Dialogue On-line Discussion group, a "chat-line" where rural citizens can continue to have a voice in federal policy-making and exchange ideas.
  • Rural and Remote Canada Online at www.rural-canada.ca is a Government On-Line initiative to provide Canadians in rural and remote regions a single window to information and services, and an opportunity to engage in dialogue and share knowledge on rural and remote issues with each other, and with the Government of Canada. Citizens in rural and remote Canada are involved in the development process to ensure that their needs and interests are met.
  • "Information Pathfinders" are available on the rural web site. These provide information on programs and services, reference materials, contact names and addresses of related associations and organizations.
  • Pathfinder topics include rural tourism, the recruitment of rural doctors, entrepreneurship opportunities for rural youth, micro-credit, rural literacy, rural child care and writing proposals.
  • The Rural Exhibits Program has visited 650 venues in communities across Canada in the last five years. It travels to fairs, conferences, trade shows and other events. Rural Exhibits distributes publications from various government departments and promotes access to the Government of Canada on-line.
  • The The Canadian Rural Information Service provides one-stop access by phone (1-888-757-8725), e-mail (cris@agr.gc.ca) and toll-free fax number (1-800-884-9899) to information, programs and services of particular interest to rural Canadians. The service also provides customized information packages, bibliographies and referrals to expert sources.

For further information on the Information Outreach program, please call 1 888 781-2222, consult our rural Web site at www.rural.gc.ca or contact the Regional Advisor , Rural Secretariat, in your region.
