10 Steps to Community Action
This partnership project is a locally designed leadership development program for emerging rural leaders. It is based on a program developed in the early 1990's in Ontario. However, it will be updated and adapted to the needs of agricultural rural communities in British Columbia and tailored to today's needs.
Funding Approved: $39,900

Sustainable Agriculture Plan
This partnership project will aid in the development of a sustainable agricultural plan in the Upper Skeena region of British Columbia as a key component of the overall community economic development strategy.
Funding Approved: $60,000

Northern Greenhouse Conference
This conference will address the issue of food security in northern British Columbia. It will be aimed at community groups, farmers and home gardeners who may be interested in collaborating in the development of community greenhouses. This is one strategy to address food security by increasing the amount of high-quality, fresh food available either on the market or through a community initiative.
Funding Approved: $8,000

Beaver County Community Economic Development Plan
This partnership project will result in an action plan for five municipalities to pursue actual economic opportunities specific to the region, particularly in the agricultural sector, which is the only major industry in the region.
Funding Approved: $60,000

Future of Agriculture Study
This partnership project will help the agricultural community understand and prepare for the changes affecting them in a region where diversity of lifestyle and business opportunities, proximity to urban centres, and growth of residential and industrial sectors are all having an impact on the local agricultural community. It will also determine which strategies and land use policies will allow agriculture to flourish and fit in Strathcona County.
Funding Approved: $45,000

Rural Alberta Showcase
This workshop was part of a larger agricultural event. The workshop allowed community leaders an opportunity to hear strategies and issues to help them keep their communities alive and vibrant. It was an opportunity to form networks and share ideas with participants from different agricultural rural Alberta communities.
Funding Approved: $6,000

2001 Alberta Community Access Program (CAP) Conference: Rural Stream
The Rural Stream is one part of a larger conference and will help to educate rural agricultural participants on the capabilities of the Internet available through the CAP site. There will be 150 delegates from across Alberta, most from agriculture-based communities. Of these delegates, 90% of these delegated will be CAP Site Administrators, 60% of which are involved in agriculture of some form.

Saskatchewan Council for Community Development (SCCD)
The objective of this Rural Coordination Organization project is to expand the role of the SCCD as the only organization in Saskatchewan that promotes and uses an inter-sectoral, collaborative approach to developing a vibrant social environment, optimal economic opportunities, and enriched quality of life with the ultimate goal of enhancing rural sustainability in Saskatchewan.
Funding Approved: $240,000 over three years

Sustainable Community Planning
Through sustainable community planning partnership project, the Carlton Trail REDA will act as a "community coach" to assist agricultural communities in developing actions plans and projects to realize their community goals that were identified through a consultation and goal setting process.
Funding Approved: $6,908

Internet Workshop for Sustainable Prairie Management in Rural Saskatchewan
This partnership project will aid in the development of an on-line native prairie management workshop to orient a pilot group of rural landowners through a number of Internet-based modules, including harvesting and marketing of native seed and converting crop land to native species.

Value-added Guide/Workbook and Training Project
This partnership project will develop a step-by-step guide/workbook to aid individuals and groups in agricultural communities with the development of a value-added industry.
Funding Approved: $18,400

Meeting the Innovation Challenge
This conference will raise private sector awareness of recent reports on innovation, and build upon these reports by establishing effective linkages and next steps for the public and private sectors to work together to meet the innovation challenge.
Funding Approved: $5,000

Agri-Business Opportunities in Muskoka
This partnership project will identify current and potential land uses in the District of Muskoka as well as new markets and micro-enterprise opportunities for agri-business.
Funding Approved: $25,000

The Future of Agriculture
This workshop provoked thought and discussion, acknowledged the changes that are occurring, looked at the resultant challenges and highlighted current and future opportunities for the agricultural community. It also provided grassroots feedback to all levels of government.

Preparation of a Book of Procedures Based on the Experience of the ‘De La Terre...À La Table' Network
This partnership project will use the experience of the ‘de la Terre...à la Table' Network to prepare a book of procedures on the establishment of an agri-tourism network and an evaluation method for this type of activity.
Funding Approved: $25,000

Mauricie Region Agricultural and Agri-Tourist Products Marketing Portal
This partnership project will consist of designing and establishing a portal to serve as a showcase for producers offering agricultural and agri-tourism products in the Mauricie region. The products will be listed in an electronic catalogue and may be ordered and paid for online. A delivery service will also be offered.

3rd Quebec Rural University
At this conference, the Quebec Rural University (URQ) facilitated the interlinking of research knowledge and knowledge derived from rural practice. The adaptation of the agriculture and agri-food sector was the subject of three conference themes: renaissance of agriculture in northern regions; adaptation to new market development avenues (e-business); and, the economic potential of small fruits.

Farm Visit/Saint-Camille Regional Agricultural Diversification Fair
The 3rd Saint-Camille Regional Agricultural Diversification Fair focussed on the various agricultural realities in an increasingly specialized rural environment. The forum gave participants the opportunity to discuss possible alternatives for keeping rural communities alive, active and dynamic. The theme of the event was "farm products on a human scale in the context of globalization." It informed people of start-up or diversification opportunities in less traditional sectors of agricultural production

Regional Conference on Rural Development and Community Action in Abitibi-Témiscamingue: "Abitibi as a Reflection: 10 Years Later - Rural Development Issues in Abitibi-Témiscamingue"
This conference will bring people together to: prepare a report describing achievements and setbacks of rural development and community action in Abitibi-Témiscamingue over the last 10 years; create a network of volunteers (citizens) and rural stakeholders, give them tools, enhance their activities and increase their know-how; develop and adopt a common rural development philosophy; and, identify potential ways to address the new issues of rural development facing Abitibi-Témiscamingue.

Rethinking Support Measures and Public Intervention in Communities in Transition: Study on Programs, Financial Products and Incentives for Agriculture and Agri-food
Through this research project, communities in transition in the Chaudière-Appalache region are proposing to do an analysis of existing support measures for agriculture and agri-food on the factors responsible for the failure to generate and sustain agricultural industry in these communities and, in particular, on means of remedying the problem.
Funding Approved: $14,750

New Brunswick Women and Community Economic Development Forum
This conference will facilitate the sharing and exchange of ideas among New Brunswick women who are involved or would like to be involved in community economic development (CED), thus allowing the development of strategies/solutions for problems facing rural, agricultural, coastal and urban communities in New Brunswick.

Canadian Association of Fairs and Exhibitions (CAFE)
The overall goal of this Rural Coordination Organization project is to help CAFE clarify and commence implementation of a new and more relevant role for the organization. Its activities will include: establishing a Web site to share relevant fair-related information with their members; contributing CAFE-relevant input to federal policies and programs; and, acting as a dissemination point for federal information into many rural communities.

Associated Country Women of the World 23rd Triennial Conference "Volunteers Make Visions a Reality"
At the 23rd Triennial Conference for the Associated Country Women of the World (ACWW) approximately 1,000 women from upwards of sixty-five (65) countries participated in a series of plenary sessions, discussion groups, informal networking and seminar presentations that addressed identified issues affecting the viability of agricultural communities globally.

Agriculture Institute of Canada (AIC) 2001 Conference and Workshops "Sustaining Rural Canada"
This conference will bring together close to 1000 participants representing a broad range of the Canadian agricultural sector. The intent of this conference is to provide professional agrologists and other organizations' representatives with the opportunity to be more aware of the challenges facing rural agricultural communities, and, in the workshops, to focus on successful programs and projects to meet these challenges

The New Rural Economy: From Challenge to Action
This conference will enhance the capacity of local organizations to respond to rural issues; study community-based responses to socio-economic adaptation issues faced by agricultural communities in transition; evaluate rural needs and explore ways to overcome the challenges facing rural communities; showcase recent research on rural issues and promote continuing research; and, identify courses of action that participants can take from the conference and adapt to their rural situations
Funding Approved: $20,000

Conference on the Development of Young Rural Leaders
This conference will focus on the development of youth leadership in minority language communities as part of Rural Expo 2001. The young Canadians who participate in the conference will acquire tools for creating and maintaining networks and develop leadership skills required in Francophone rural and agricultural communities outside Quebec.
