YOUTHnet: Interactive Online Youth Counselling Service
Project number: NF-0030-2001-E
YOUTHnet will provide an online chat room, Web page, bulletin board posting and quick response e-mail system to enable youth to access counselling, support and information on a variety of health and life issues.

Enhancing Literacy Through Technology: A Community Centred Initiative
Project number: NF-0038-2001-E
This project, based on the concept of e-learning, will place computers in the homes of Deer Lake Community Learning Centre clients who are unable to attend the Centre, to allow them to complete the first level of the Centre’s literacy program.

Career Opportunities Enhancement
Project number: NF-0068-2001-E
Through this project, rural and Aboriginal youth with a high school education or less will be offered weekly workshops involving extensive research on various careers, as well as a field trip to St. John’s to explore numerous educational institutions.

Independence Through Information: Peer Advocacy for Seniors

This project will assist seniors in forming local peer advocate groups in rural areas in Newfoundland, with ongoing support and reinforcement to ensure the groups’ growth and independence as a local resource.

An Adult Day Support Program
Project number: NF-0081-2001-E
This project will be establish a gathering place for the rural residents of Peterview, NFLD and surrounding communities, particularly those with disabilities, to participate in social activities, develop life skills and improve their knowledge of health issues, the legal system, government departments and other relevant services.

A Model that Enhances Community Development
Project number: NF-0087-2001-E
This project will test the Bridging the Gap: From Education to Employment model, which provides rural residents with onsite academic and technical training at partnering resource-based companies. The goal of this project is to increase the academic and workplace skills of potential employees, thereby ensuring that partnering companies have a productive workforce.

The Vista School District will employ a Family Resource Facilitator to work in several rural communities to assist in developing leadership skills and the knowledge base required to establish family literacy/learning initiatives.

Strengthening Rural Families Project

This project will provide a comprehensive social skills training program for rural families at high risk for drug use, with the goal of improving the family environment and the parents' ability to nurture and provide appropriate learning opportunities for their children.

All Ages/All Stages
Project number: NS-0022-2001-E
This project will involve several hundred children in stimulating workshops, theatre productions and dramalabs. Out of this will come summer employment, two months of valuable training in theatre arts, and enjoyable, educational, summer entertainment.

Nova Scotia Health Network

Through this project, a Web site will be created to provide a province-wide consumer health information service through the cooperative efforts of public libraries, the Canadian Health Network, the Nova Scotia Provincial Library and CAP sites.

Hants Shore Infrastructure Development Project
Project number: NS-0228-2001-E
This project will develop recreational, educational, cultural and tourist facilities, bringing together 14 communities of the Hants Shore region. In the process, community members will have the opportunity to learn new skills, develop leadership skills and find a common focus for this rural area.

Communications Development and Skills Transfer
Project number: NS-0255-2001-E
This project aims to inform and empower the communities in Whitney Pier, Cape Breton by promoting the development of skills in various types of communication forms, especially for women who face barriers to employment.

Community Based Research for Habitat Conservation
Project number: NS-0232-2001-E
This project will test and develop a new product for buffering the Salmon River to improve this freshwater habitat and provide the basis for fish population recovery. All facets of the river environment, including salmon population levels, water quality and invertebrate species, will be monitored throughout the project.

Aware and Supportive Communities

Working toward the co-ordination of support services for survivors of sexual assault throughout New Brunswick, this project will also undertake education, awareness and prevention services for sexual assault and sexual violence.

Preventing Homelessness Through Community-Based Employment Opportunities for At-Risk Rural Youth
Project number: NB-0179-2001-E
This projects aims to identify, motivate and engage socially and economically marginalized rural youth in acquiring life skills and technical competence through active participation in community enterprises, which will increase their options for employability and reduce their risk of homelessness, poverty and criminal activity.

Riding the Wave - Youth in Action Team
Project number: NB-0213-2001-E
This project is designed to enhance follow-up activities of the Making Waves project, which educates and involves teens in dating violence prevention activities and develops resources materials for teens, teachers, guidance counsellors and school administrators.

Non-Timber Forest Products Research and Demonstration Partnership
Project number: NB-0217-2001-E
This project will create research trials and demonstration sites to monitor the ecological effects of different management regimes and levels of harvesting for non-timber forest products, while examining the economic potential of three selected non-timber forest species.

Training of the Trainers — Providing Community Capacity to Respond to Wildlife in Rural Areas
Project number: NB-0207-2001-E
The project will strengthen community leadership and foster strategic partnerships by developing a specialized, community-based wildlife response training. This unique training will be given to provide interested individuals the capabilities and resources to handle endangered wildlife situations in rural areas.

Le rendez-vous des marcheurs

St-Clément, Lower St-Lawrence
Le rendez-vous des marcheurs is a project aimed at promoting the rural development of the Lower St-Lawrence by means of a value-added recreation and tourism project. As a result of this initiative, a kit will be produced to guide other rural communities in the development of thematic gateways, offering visitors the opportunity to discover the specific character of rural communities and to understand them better. The kit will be made available.

Community economic development and training: a promising partnership

Scottstown, Eastern Townships
The project follows from a citizenship training initiative taken by the residents of Scotstown. It proposes a comprehensive action in terms of evaluation, training, learning practice, and replication with community partners, in order to improve individual and collective living conditions in rural communities, as part of an endogenous and sustainable development approach. The results and learning will be shared.

Recreation as a youth development vector in the RCM of Acton

Acton Vale, Montérégie
The project aims to increase active recreation for adolescents. It consists in testing and disseminating an "active democracy consultation model" involving a problem-solving approach with community partners and stakeholders. The goals of the project are to strengthen capacities and leadership and to enhance local recreation potential and resources. The model and its results will be made available.

Innovative Learning and Work Opportunities in Nunavik
Project number: QC-0063-2001-E
Nunavik, Northern Quebec
Aimed at helping the whole village of Kangiqsualujjuaq, but particularly young people, this project will provide innovative learning and work opportunities by using newly acquired communications technology such as high-speed Internet and the Internet Satellite Pilot Project for Education. Results and learning will be shared.

Accessibility 2001

RCM of Abitibi
The purpose of Accessibility 2001 is to identify, with all stakeholders concerned, the best solutions for improving the mobility of individuals, thereby enhancing access to services in the RCM of Abitibi. The project aims to improve existing resources and to test new tools, including an electronic dispatcher to reduce the operating costs generally associated with paratransit projects. The results and learning will be shared.

Taking care of oneself while taking care of others

RCM of Bellechasse
The project focusses on family caregivers in the RCM of Bellechasse and aims to experiment on ways of improving their quality of life and well-being. The tools to be developed include a burnout prevention guide (written manual and audiovisual document) that may be useful to other rural communities. The guide will be made available. Funding: $25,000

Cultivation of the Canadian Yew Tree

Baie St-Paul and region
The goal of the project is to stem rural decline by improving income sources for forest producers in the Charlevoix region. It aims to do this by establishing a profitable methodology for the cultivation of the Canadian Yew tree which is used in the production of taxanes, pharmaceutical compounds of high commercial value. The results of the study will be released.

Saint-Camille, Eastern Township
The project developed by the Saint-Camille Care and Services Solidarity Cooperative aims to experiment on a co-operative user participation formula in extended health care and services to promote autonomy, updating and social integration of senior citizens and in so doing to promote a reduction in health costs through prevention, promotion and social development.

Nunavik Harvest 2002 "Northern Delights" Inuit Herbal Teas
Project Number: QC-0275-2001-E
Nunavik, Northern Quebec
In order to create a viable commercial environment that will both stimulate job creation and provide a new approach of securing economic benefit from the flora of the region , the Avataq Cultural Institute has developed five herbal teas that are based on research of Inuit tradition and culture. The current objective is to increase the harvest to meet anticipated demand, and to provide the necessary assistance to enable the harvesting activities in the community to become self-sufficient by expanding the harvest to five additional Inuit communities of the Nunavik region. Profits generated through this commercial initiative would be channelled to the Avataq Cultutal Institute core mandate activities, which are to promote Inuit language and culture in Nunavik. Results and learning will be shared.

This project will design, develop and test a model for delivering online counselling for women who are in abusive situations and provide a template for shelters across Canada to support the introduction of online counselling services in their communities.

This project will develop a Web site and brochure aimed at women, to address issues such as community, economic and business development, while demonstrating through actual advocacy exercises and workshops, the practical application of economic and community decision-making strategies.

Healthy Living for Persons with Disabilities

This project will identify the issues and needs relating to healthy living for people with disabilities, and address the gaps that exist in rural communities by preparing strategies to improve opportunities for education, employment, community inclusion and quality of life for these people.

Rural Virtual School
Project number: ON-0093-2001-E
This project will provide students and adult learners in the Frontenac, Lennox and Addington counties with the opportunity to acquire secondary school credits online.

Building Community Capacity in Rural Essex County
Project number: ON-0165-2001-E
This project will work with two recently restructured municipalities to establish a process that would bring together various community representatives and citizens to identify strengths and work on solutions that make sense to each community, thereby developing a model which will be shared with the other municipalities of Essex County.

Peer Group Behaviour Awareness Funding Proposal
Project number: ON-0298-2001-E
Through this project, the Dryden and District AIDS Committee will work with teenagers to support them in promoting awareness of risk behaviour patterns amongst students in grades 7 and 8.

Rural Eastern Ontario Development

The Rural Eastern Ontario Development project will work with rural businesses to identify opportunities to attract visitors to rural areas. A signage program will be created to better identify resources for businesses and to facilitate access to the local and national trail networks.

A Certified Literate Community in Manitoba Pilot Project

The rural community of Beausejour, Manitoba is undertaking a literacy project that will enable it to market itself as a viable option for industry development and for a better quality of life. It will also be developing a Certified Literate Community model for other communities to follow. A better economic and social infrastructure will be achieved by increasing public awareness of the problem of low literacy and its impacts; encouraging the use of plain language by organizations; and strengthening community capacity building.

Strengthening the learning of skills and leadership through education in rural communities
Project No.: MB-0286-2001-F
Pluri-elles, the only Francophone organization in Manitoba meeting the needs of the province’s rural and urban communities in French-language literacy, proposes to create and develop learning tools to strengthen language skills and leadership in rural Francophone communities in Manitoba.

Land Use Study
Project Number: MB-0111-2001-E
The intention of this project is to document ecological knowledge and indigenous land values into an information base that can be used by members of the First Nations to develop educational curriculum and foster job stability. The project will focus on Ojibwe Non-Timber Forest Products that are customarily used by members of the First Nations.

Questnetwork.com is an online, community-owned business network that will connect southwestern Saskatchewan entrepreneurs, product and service providers, government agencies and educational institutions. It will enable them to share information and resources to become more involved in the knowledge-based economy. It will also provide the region’s residents with services such as community and business profiles, e-commerce and business chat lines.

Northwest Industrial Training Program

This project will test an alternative delivery method of post-secondary education in the trades though apprenticeship for the residents of Northern Saskatchewan, with the goal of increasing the numbers of tradespeople in Northwest Saskatchewan, particularly to develop the forestry sector of the northern economy; and, to strengthen existing and develop new partnerships between local industry and Aboriginal, Provincial, Federal and Municipal government.

Curriculum for Intro to Horticulture

The Introduction to Horticulture curriculum will be based on the Saanich Indian Band’s current training requirements to launch, operate, and maintain a new greenhouse and surrounding agriculture land base. It will include training projects specific to greenhouse culture, landscape development and maintenance, organic/indigenous plant management and selection, and traditional use of plants/herbs for cooking and medicinal use.

Youth Capacity Development Pilot Project

The Youth Capacity Development Pilot Project is designed to help address the skills shortage in organizations within the Skeena Queen Charlotte Regional District on the North Coast of British Columbia. It will serve as a model for the recruitment and placement of recent university and college graduates as interns within the community. Unemployed university and college graduates will be recruited and placed as Youth Interns in business and community organizations for a one-year pilot project. These placements will be based on identified expertise needs.

This project will work with community groups and agencies in different parts of British Columbia to develop a framework and implementation strategy for funding community-inspired health promotion initiatives.

A Web site will be created to provide the youth of the Columbia Valley with accurate, up-to-date information on a variety of topics relating to the health and wellness of youth such as eating disorders, drug and alcohol concerns, sexuality, and relationships with friends and family.

A centralized community kitchen will provide fresh and nutritious food, as well as education and support to residents for whom access to fresh and nutritious food has not been possible due to a lack of transportation, limited income, and poor knowledge of nutritional needs.

Arts School / Multi-Use Centre

This project aims to develop the South Slave Region of the Northwest Territories as the art capital of the N.W.T. The planned Aurora Arts School would be centred in the Town of Fort Smith and will initially draw students from the Western Arctic and Alberta, and ultimately from around the world. This school, with plans to include a Multi-Use Centre, will serve the needs of producers throughout the South Slave Region and will be the only institution of its kind in the NWT.

Paulatuk Child and Youth Drop-in Program
Project number: NT-0201-2001-E
The Paulatuk Coalition is proposing a drop-in program for children and youth ages 6-15 living in the community. This proposed program will include recreational activities, personal safety training, therapeutic self-esteem building activities, communication skills training, non-violent conflict resolution strategies, community development opportunities and cultural teachings.

Youth Worker Trainee Proposal
Project number: NT-0200-2001-E
This program will create a supportive environment for community youth to work together and set common goals. It is hoped the empowerment of these youth will aid in the community’s overall goal of reducing youth criminal behaviour, substance abuse, violence, and other behaviours that place these young people at risk.

Deninoo Community Council Recreation Project
Project number: NT-0197-2001-E
This project provides funding for a program coordinator to organize and implement youth activities in Fort Resolution, helping to deliver quality programs in the community. There will be a variety of year-round activities held at various recreational facilities in the community, including cultural and traditional events.

The Inuvik Community Garden Project
Project number: NT-0202-2001-E
The Community Gardening Society of Inuvik has converted a decommissioned arena into a community greenhouse that will extend the growing season of numerous plants and vegetables, ensure a successful harvest and allow the production of a greater variety of fresh produce. Greenhouse officials also plan to study the effect of longer summer hours on crops. The greenhouse will be the most northerly greenhouse in Canada and will serve as an effective model for other northern communities.

Developing Our Capacity for Business: Regional Economic Capacity Building for the Métis of the South Slave
Project number: NT-0195-2001-E
This project will provide funding for the South Slave Métis Economic Corporation to hire a development officer for a one-year term, to carry out the Corporation’s transition to a sustainable regional Aboriginal economic development organization. This will help to provide economic and employment benefits primarily to Métis in and around the South Slave region.

Hay River Dene Reserve - Structures, Land and Environmental Inventory
Project number: NT-0199-2001-E
The Structures, Land and Environmental Inventory pilot project will provide a comprehensive data base for all structures and designated land dispositions on the Hay River Dene Reserve. This database will include information on occupants, legal status, condition of structures, environmental concerns, forest fire hazards, and other relevant information. The database will also provide recommendations for cleanup, forest fuel hazard reduction and building maintenance requirements.

Yukon Reading Readiness Project

This project will address literacy "gaps" in young students to ensure that all Yukon children begin school with the skills they need to learn to read. This will be accomplished through the creation of a "Reading Readiness Team", a "Reading Contract" and "Made in the Yukon - Reading Readiness Kits". Training will also be available for teachers.

The essence of this project is to design, develop and deliver introductory and intermediate computer technician training to Rural Yukon and First Nations participants through a series of traveling training sessions with intermittent group training at Yukon College Community Campuses and in First Nation-designated training sites.

Yukon River Watershed - Assessment and Awareness Project

This project will provide a comprehensive assessment of the ‘history’, issues and concerns affecting the Yukon River watershed, while increasing the awareness of First Nation governments, individuals and organizations on environmental issues in the watershed. The assessment and education components will provide First Nations peoples and communities with the tools needed in their efforts to build capacity in environmental stewardship.

Yukon Volunteer Bureau

This project will create resources to support the operation of a Yukon-wide Volunteer Bureau. These resources will be used to implement a northern online service that will match volunteers with opportunities while creating a database for community groups who may need help in the future.

Yukon Work Information Network (YuWIN) - Phase II Rural Development
Project number: YT-0257-2001-E
This project will help connect rural Yukoners to the knowledge-based economy and society and help them acquire the skills to use the technology. Camp Cook Training Course

This project will fund a three-week certificate course that will prepare 15 students from local communities to become qualified Diamond Driller Assistants, in response to ongoing demand from mining comanies in the region. This will allow the students to receive training in all aspects of diamond drilling including: safety; drilling; camp life; and communication. The student’s practical skills and abilities will be assessed and presented in a final report to the Hamlet of Taloyoak, Kitikmeot Employment and Training Partners, and to funding agencies.

Walking the Prevention Circle

This project will promote abuse prevention education in Canada's rural and remote aboriginal communities. This will be accomplished by giving the "Walking the Prevention Circle" program a truly national scope in response to the many requests received from rural aboriginal communities. The program will involve the production of a resource guide, a video, the training of 14 Aboriginal Prevention Educators and workshops in eight rural Aboriginal communities where the trained educators will be mentored.
