FUNDING

The Canadian Rural Partnership's Pilot Projects Initiative has empowered communities to test local solutions to local challenges and to share the learning throughout the NWT since 1999. Over the past 4 years, 26 projects across the NWT were approved for funding; bringing the total allocated to the NWT to $918 137.

Team NWT marketed and offered guidance on how to present an application to the Pilot Projects Initiative. The Team also reviewed all eligible proposals received from the NWT and makes recommendations on the approval of projects. The last year of project intake under the Pilot Project Initiative was 2001-2002.

The Rural Development Initiative is the second funding program under the Canadian Rural Partnership. The overall objective of the Rural Development Initiative is to help rural and remote communities respond to community development challenges by supporting the development and adoption of long-term, sustainable rural development strategies that will strengthen their ability to build local solutions to local challenges. For more information you may call toll-free all locations at 1-877-295-7160 or visit the Web site: http://www.rural.gc.ca/rural-dev/index_e.phtml

Applications for the Rural Development Initiative will be accepted on an ongoing basis until October 31, 2002.

CARCI - the Canadian Agricultural Rural Communities Initiative is another funding program whose objective is to enhance the viability of agricultural rural communities, particularly those affected by changes in the agriculture sector. CARCI has been allocated $9.3 million over three years from the Canadian Adaptation and Rural Development (CARD II) Fund. This initiative responds to CARD's rural development priority.

Agricultural Rural Minority Language Community Planning Initiative - Rural development has been identified as a priority of the minority language communities across Canada. One of the vehicles for achieving this is the promotion of comprehensive and strategic planning at the rural community level. AAFC and the Department of Canadian Heritage (DCH) have developed an Initiative to support agricultural rural minority language communities across the country in the production of community development plans.

This Initiative's goal is to assist agricultural rural minority language communities build consensus on development options that draw on the community assets and balance economic, social and environmental objectives.

The Initiative's outcome would be an increase in community engagement and strategic planning in order to identify unique business opportunities in agricultural rural minority language communities. It would support the diversification of the community's economic base and favor job creation. This approach should be driven from the bottom up with proactive community involvement.
