National Rural Conference

The Third National Rural Conference took place in Red Deer, Alberta on October 21-23, 2004. To read and see more about the conference, please click here.

Beginning with the National Rural Workshop held near Belleville, Ontario in 1998, then the first National Rural Conference held in Magog, Quebec in 2000, and the second National Rural Conference held in Charlottetown, PEI in 2002, the Government of Canada has been inviting leaders and citizens from rural communities and organizations across Canada to influence federal government programs, policies and services that affect them. Participants have also had the opportunity to network, share best practices and learn about new community development initiatives.

Through the National Rural Workshop and other Rural Dialogue events, Canadians from rural, remote and northern communities helped develop the Federal Framework for Action in Rural Canada which set out the government's Vision for Rural Canada and 11 Priority Areas.

The Magog and Charlottetown National Rural Conferences resulted in the Rural Action Plan and the Charlottetown Action Plan, which outlined issues raised at these conferences and actions the Government of Canada would take in response to them.

In May 2003, the National Rural Youth Conference brought youth together from rural communities across the nation.
