GOVERNMENT OF CANADA SUPPORTS MANITOBA'S RURAL FORUM 2004

OTTAWA, April 22, 2004 - A major conference that brings together representatives of Manitoba's rural communities for three days of discussions on rural life today got a financial boost from the Government of Canada.

Georges Farrah, Parliamentary Secretary Responsible for Rural Development, announced the Manitoba Chambers of Commerce will receive $10,000 toward the operation of Rural Forum 2004 in Brandon. Rural Forum 2004: Challenges Fuelling Opportunities, to be held April 22-24, attracts about 8,000 participants, and includes discussions on everything from identifying new development opportunities for Manitoba's rural, remote and Aboriginal communities to retaining and attracting youth. Guest speakers, seminars and workshops on a variety of topics are offered throughout the annual event.

"Rural Forum is a unique showcase that enables members of Manitoba's rural and northern communities to come together to develop skills and identify new opportunities for their communities," Mr. Farrah said. "I'm pleased to support this opportunity to celebrate and share both the successes and challenges facing these communities and their residents."

Graham Starmer, president of the Manitoba Chambers of Commerce, added, "The Manitoba Chambers of Commerce has been an honoured partner in Rural Forum since its inception in Neepawa in 1993 and continues to support bringing together our rural communities and their youth to this great event."

Funding for Rural Forum 2004 comes from the $5 million, five-year Community Capacity Building plan announced in June, 2002.

The Province of Manitoba is a participant in federal/provincial/territorial discussions on the pursuit of a co-ordinated approach to rural policy, focusing on the cultural, social, environmental and economic conditions necessary for vibrant rural communities.
