Plant Production Division

The Plant Production Division is responsible for the design of national plant production programs, standards, policies, regulations and initiatives to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of seed and fertilizer inspection and certification services. As well, the Division ensures that seeds and fertilizers sold in and imported to Canada, and seed exported from Canada meet established standards. The Division is also responsible for the registration of a variety of field crops; fertilizers and supplements; and for granting Plant Breeders Rights for varieties of agricultural and horticultural crops. It also represents the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and government at domestic and international fora.

The Division consists of three sections as follows:

Fertilizers. This section's activities include fertilizer and supplement product registration, the development of standards for fertilizers and supplements, and label review of products marketed in Canada.

Plant Breeders' Rights Office. This section's activities focus on the granting of plant breeders' rights under the Plant Breeder's Rights Act.

Seed. This section is responsible for the administration of the Seeds Act and Regulations, Parts I, III and IV to help to ensure that seeds sold in, imported into and exported from Canada meet established standards for quality including varietal purity and germination; are labelled so that they are properly represented in the marketplace; and in the case of most agricultural crop varieties, are registered prior to sale in Canada. The Registrars for both variety registration and registered seed establishment programs reside in the Seed Section.
