Livestock Feeds

Using the authority of the federal Feeds Act, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency administers a national livestock feed program to verify that livestock feeds manufactured and sold in Canada or imported into Canada are safe, effective and are labelled appropriately. Effective feeds contribute to the production and maintenance of healthy, efficient livestock.

The principal thrust of the national feed program is safety. The program is delivered by means of pre-sale product evaluation and registration by staff of the Feed Section, and post-market inspection and monitoring by Agency field staff located in all provinces of Canada.

CFIA activities include:

  • evaluating and approving ingredients for use in livestock feeds;
  • establishing standards and policies in relation to product registration requirements and nutritional criteria for the exemption of feeds from registration;
  • evaluating and registering specialty products of specific safety or efficacy concern.
  • monitoring of feeds via random sampling and analysis for the presence of residues of chemicals, pesticides, contamination by heavy metals, mycotoxins and salmonella and verifying drug guarantees in feeds.
  • undertaking investigations in response to detections of contamination of meat, milk or eggs and producer complaints related to feed, conducted at both commercial feed mills and on farm;
  • reviewing labels of medicated feeds for accuracy to verify that the proper level of medication is provided and that all applicable cautions and warnings are provided to enable safe use of the feed as directed.
  • field inspection staff carry out comprehensive commercial feed mill and on-farm inspections involved in the production of medicated feeds.

Livestock Producers and the Feed Ban
Canadian producers may only feed their ruminants approved animal protein products such as pure porcine, equine, poultry, and fish. Banned as ingredients in ruminant feeds are "prohibited materials" - protein including meat and bone meal from mammals other than pigs and horses.
