Canadian Animal Health Consultative Committee (CAHCC)

The Canadian Animal Health Consultative Committee (CAHCC) was struck over 25 years ago as a forum of discussion and consultation on animal health issues.

The CAHCC is made up of national industry representatives, federal-provincial animal health authorities, national animal health and welfare organizations, veterinary college deans, and invited guests such as the United States Department of Agriculture and the Secretaría de Agricultura, Ganadería, Desarrollo Rural, Pesca y Alimentación de México. Although the role of the CAHCC has changed over the years, its membership continues to share the goal of promoting long-term sustainability of Canada's animal industries by providing communication, consultation and co-ordination between the CFIA, its provincial partners, and regulated animal industries, and by reviewing and developing animal health policies and programs.

The Animal Health and Production Division and the Animal Disease Surveillance Unit of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency have traditionally hosted annual meetings which include the Canadian Animal Health Consultative Committee meeting, the Expert Committee on Animal Health meeting, and the Federal-Provincial Animal Health meeting. There have also been a number of sub-committees and working groups focussed on specific policy and animal health related issues.

Two awards are presented by the CAHCC membership each year. The Carl Block Award is given to individuals in recognition of their contribution to the national Animal Health Program, and the Kenneth Wells Award is given to individuals in government and academia in recognition of their contribution to policies, implementation and delivery of Canada's national Animal Health Program.

The CAHCC continues to evolve-the strategic importance of annual consultations has been replaced by modern communications technology. In 2005, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency shared responsibility for the annual CAHCC meeting with the Canadian Animal Health Coalition, which represents several organizations and which assumed the role of host for the Canadian Animal Health and Emergency Management Conference.

Reports from previous years are available upon request by contacting the CAHCC Executive Secretary, Chris Quinlan.
