Introduction

Printer-friendly PDF version

Since 1896, the services of private veterinary practitioners have benefited Canada-United States trade in live animals. Today, approximately 3000 private veterinarians are authorized by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) under the Accredited Veterinarian Program. These accredited veterinarians assist the CFIA in the delivery of its National Animal Health Program by performing duties related to the Animal Health Disease Control Program and certifying animals for export to the United States or Mexico.

This manual provides a reference for the CFIA's Management of the Accredited Veterinarian Program and its purposes are the following:

  • to instruct CFIA field veterinarians and managers on the accreditation of veterinary practitioners to perform specific functions
  • to provide guidelines for the supervision of accredited veterinarians
  • to describe measures for correcting deviations from performance standards by accredited veterinarians

The manual also describes the system for ensuring the quality of the Accredited Veterinarian Program and the mechanism for identifying any program deficiencies.

Comments on the content of this manual should be directed to the National Co-ordinator, Accredited Veterinarian Program, using the form in Module 3.7 Quality Assurance: Observation and Complaint Form.
