Importer Fined for Illegally Importing Fish

On August 10, 2006, five convictions and $9,000 in fines, were registered against Ng Fung Enterprises (1999) Ltd. in a provincial court in B.C. for violating the Fish Inspection Act .

The violations were discovered when Ng Fung Enterprises (1999) Ltd. applied to renew their fish import licence. A review of their import documentation by the CFIA revealed that the importer had failed to declare a number of shipments imported into Canada. Upon further inspection, CFIA inspectors also found that the importer had not kept import records for one shipment.

A fine of $2,000 was assessed for each of four counts of failing to report importations of fish to CFIA, and a further fine of $1,000 was assessed for failing to keep records of imported fish.

The CFIA is responsible for enforcing a variety of federal legislation including the Fish Inspection Act and its regulations. The CFIA’s jurisdiction is limited to the enforcement of these Acts and their Regulations. It protects consumers by contributing to food safety, the protection of plants and the health of animals in Canada.
