Investment Secretariat and its Partners

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) strengthens the competitiveness of Canada's agri-food industries by promoting and facilitating strategic investments, partnerships and the introduction of advanced technologies.

The Investment Secretariat at AAFC is a small core group of professionals that acts as the focal point for the department's investment function. It is pro-active in the development of business cases to attract new investments and responsive to inquiries about opportunities or information from the global business community or other government agencies. Staff of the Secretariat draw on the sector and scientific knowledge resident in the entire department and work closely with the Department of International Trade Canada (ITCan) (Investment Partnerships Branch) and staff at embassies or consulates abroad and all provinces in carrying out its mandate.

The Secretariat and investment representative from all provinces work co-operatively through a joint Federal-Provincial Steering Committee on Investment (FPSCI) that meets bi-annually. In the past the group has organized several highly focused receptions, seminars and other events to promote investment in Canada.

Investment Secretariat Services Provided

In addition to the general information available, as outlined on this web site, the Secretariat is pleased to work with individuals to provide information that responds to specific questions, including:

  • Information on industry issues or international trade policies
  • Access to industry and market research
  • Advice and guidance on the application of federal agri-food regulations or policies
  • Information related to taxation, transportation and logistics

The Secretariat periodically conducts incoming and outgoing missions to facilitate the adoption of new technologies, the creation of strategic partnerships or the investigation of new growth opportunities. These missions primarily comprise members of the business community and rely on the extensive network of contacts in our posts abroad or the department's regional offices within Canada.

The "Investment in Canada" web site www.investincanada.gc.ca provides potential foreign investors with the most current and relevant information possible.
